January 2012 ushers in many opportunities for Professional Development at CCCOnline.

All prospective CCCOnline instructors need to complete the following Sessions before they can teach for CCCOnline .
However I encourage current CCCOnline instructors to sign-up for these sessions, in case you want to brush up on your CCCOnline 'instructional skills' before the semester starts.

Workshop- Getting Started-Specifically geared towards Pre-Hire CCCOnline Instructors
When : January 9 2012 - January 16 2012
Where: Online
Focus: This is a one week online orientation course for new Instructors. Getting Started introduces instructors to the culture of CCCOnline,support resources and support processes for teaching with CCCOnline.

Workshop-D2L essentials- Specifically geared towards Pre-Hire CCCOnline Instructors
When : January 9 2012 - January 20 2012
Where: Online
Focus: This is a two week fully online facilitated workshop designed to introduce instructors to the Desire to Learn (D2L) course system. Its primary goal is to prepare instructors to teach with D2L at a basic level their first term. Activities are completed in a Practice Course.

Well, 'Super' Colleagues, poetry may not be my forte, but being excited certainly is, especially for the CCCOnline Annual face-to-face Conference on September 30th , 2011 at Arapahoe Community College!

Some related information :

-Please visit ACC's website for directions and Campus maps - http://www.arapahoe.edu/about-acc/locations/campus-maps

-Parking lots are open and free for our attendees. There are no permit restrictions in any parking lots.
-Plan for your first 'Super' stop at the registration desk in M 1900, the main Cafeteria Area at ACC.

-Registration begins at 7:30 AM.

-Plan to bring a copy of your Registration confirmation email, for reference.

-If you missed registration and still plan to attend, please stop by the non-registered table that morning in M1900 to ensure you receive training credit for attending.

-Don't forget to pick up your Conference 'Superbags' during registration.

- It'll provide you with the Session Schedules, Division meeting information and other items to make it a productive Conference experience .

Focus: In this three part webinar, participants will learn about the CCCOnline Academic Integrity Policy and Procedures for addressing violations.
Participants will be able to locate associated resources for students and instructors.
Additionally, participants will discuss Committing an Act of Plagiarism as one of the forms of academic integrity violation including, but not limited to, the 2011 revised wording of the plagiarism definition, plagiarism case studies, and instructional strategies for deterring plagiarism.
Finally, participants will see a demonstration of the TurnItIn Originality Checker (Plagiarism Detection) and GradeMark (Online Markup) features available for the D2L Dropbox tool and be able to locate additional training for these features.
In each part of the webinar, participants will have an opportunity to ask questions of the facilitators.

Spring Grades due May 12

Dear Faculty;

It's that time of the semester, Spring grades are due no later than Thursday, May 12, 2011.

Please follow the directions below to enter grades for your courses. If you have any questions regarding grades, please contact me (john.schmahl@cccs.edu).

Once you have submitted your grades, we will pull a daily report listing the grades and they will be entered into Banner for the students. Grades will not be viewable by the students until the day after they are entered into banner.

You must report a Last Date of Attendance (LDA) for any student who receives a grade of “F”. If the student completed any course work or submitted any assignments during the semester, use the mid-point date for the LDA (see below for dates). If the student never submitted any assignments, never logged in or never communicated with you, use the first day of the course instead.

Mid-point – 3/17/2011

10 week courses
First day - 2/28/2011
Mid-point - 4/4/2011

Intelligent Agent Gone Wild, Again

Happy Wednesday! We apologize for any confusion that you experienced due to an intelligent agent that was created back in 2009. We have attempted to delete this agent but it returned like a little gremlin today. We have deleted it again today but please let us know if you receive any additional messages asking you to visit the CCCOnline Community Course. Student Authentication

Starting this Wednesday, February 2, your students may receive a series of authentication questions designed to help us authenticate and verify student identity. This process is managed by a third-party company called Acxiom. This is part of our on-going effort at improving student identification, attendance and retention.

The following e-mail has been sent to all students regarding the start of our use of Acxiom on Wednesday and our authentication policies in general. The 24x7 Support Center (PerceptIS) has also been informed of this change.

CCCOnline Course Authentication and Participation Policy (CAPP)

To improve our overall program integrity, ensure that each student is doing his/her own work and comply with our home colleges’ accreditation agencies, CCCOnline is implementing the following steps:

• During the semester, students may be presented with random pop-up security questions when logging into their online course(s). It is important that students answer these questions as accurately as they can.

• All students will be required to complete at least two assignments within the first two weeks of the semester.

Students who do not meet the CAPP requirements may be reported by their instructor to the CCCOnline Student Services Department.

The random security question authentication process is managed by a third-party company. CCCOnline does not have access to this database. This data is secured by the third-party company, which complies with student privacy and FERPA regulations.

Save Yourself the Headache!

At the end of each term Amy Sorenson, who is Profhelp, is inundated with questions about the Grades Tool in D2L. So, in order to avoid future headaches, we asked several faculty and Amy for helpful tips and suggestions.

Here they are:
1. Change your Personal Display options so you can always see the students' grades and the Final Calculated Grade when you enter the gradebook. http://at.ccconline.org/faculty/wiki/Tech_Tools_-_D2L_-_Grades#Set_Personal_Display_Options.3F
2. Run the Gradebook Wizard before the term starts. Enter fake grades for the Jenny Grade student to verify your grades are totaling correctly and match your Course Syllabus-Grading and Evaluation page.http://at.ccconline.org/faculty/wiki/Tech_Tools_-_D2L_-_Grades#Run_the_Grades_Setup_Wizard.3F

Are you ready to start cleaning your courses?

At times the process of getting your course "duped" or copied for the upcoming term seems convoluted, but here is a brief description of that process and your role.

Prior to the term, you and your Chair determine which course/s you would like copied and potentially how many is a reasonable amount for you and the department. The Chair then completes a form that requests that course for you and the AT team processes that request. Sometimes while they are processing the dupe request, you may see an empty course shell appear in D2L, but you will know for sure when it is ready for you to look at when you receive an automated email notifying you of the course. (If you are not getting these emails, check your SPAM folder and update your email address through the Portal or Faculty Gateway page.)

After you get the email, you have 72 hours to log into D2L and in order to confirm the content in the course is correct. ***This requires some looking around your course and checking tools like discussions and quizzes, ect to be sure they have the correct settings. Once you have checked the course to be sure it is correct, log into the CCCOnline Portal and go to the Faculty Tab to access the Content Verification Form. If there is a problem with the content in your course, contact your Chair immediately. Your next step is to get the course ready for students. Use the Course Readiness Checklist to be sure you aren't missing any steps: http://at.ccconline.org/faculty/wiki/Policies_%26_Procedures_-_Faculty_Handbook_-_Teaching_for_CCCOnline_-_Faculty_Role_in_Course_Development_and_Maintenance_-_Course_Readiness_Checklist

***Don't forget to reset your course home page, update your instructor widget, run the gradebook wizard, and clear your course navigation bar of tools like Rubrics if you aren't using them. Review the Course Readiness Checklist for a comprehensive explanation of what to remove and not to remove. Many faculty are really good house cleaners and are making tools inactive that are really needed like the question library ...so be cautious and thoughtful about this part of the clean up. The course must be ready for students for first day checks no later than Thursday morning prior to the start of the term (for spring session 1, this is January 20th). When your course is ready to be reviewed, return to the Faculty Tab on the Portal and click Course Readiness Form to acknowledge that the course is ready.

One final reminder is that you must have a content related assignment due before census which for spring 1 is February 8. This assignment must be more the introduction discussion.

Determining Last Date of Attendence

After discussions with the system financial aid directors and the system office we have determined that you may use the mid-point date of the course when reporting a student’s last date of attendance (LDA). The mid-point dates for our courses are listed below. As a reminder, the LDA must be reported for any student who receives a failing grade in a course. If the student completed any course work or submitted any assignments during the semester, use the mid-point date for the LDA. If the student never submitted any assignments, never logged in or never communicated with you, use the first day of the course instead.

Sentenceworks, the free online grammar checker available to CCCOnline students, changed it’s name to Grammarly@edu. Check out the new site and features by using the Grammarly@edu link in the Helpful Links widget inside your Desire2Learn classroom.

At the new site, you’ll find the same familiar features you’ve been using along with some new functionality including:
-Even more accurate grammar checking
-Support for more writing genres
-Printable reports

Your Sentenceworks user name and password will work at the new site (http://www.grammarly.com/edu/students). Easily retrieve your forgotten password for Grammarly by clicking on the “Forgot Your Password” link on the login page. Your password will be emailed to your college email account. Fall Grades due Dec 16!

Dear Faculty;

It's that time of the semester, Fall grades are due no later than Thursday, December 16, 2010.

Please follow the directions below to enter grades for your courses. If you have any questions regarding grades, please contact me (john.schmahl@cccs.edu).

Once you have submitted your grades, we will pull a daily report listing the grades and they will be entered into Banner for the students. Grades will not be viewable by the students until the day after they are entered.

You must report a Last Date of Attendance (LDA) for any student who receives a grade of “F”. The LDA is the date that the student submitted their last graded assessment or assignment. To find this date in D2L, you can follow the directions here http://at.ccconline.org/faculty/wiki/Tech_Tools_-_D2L_-_Classlist#How_do_I_review_student.27s_access_to_the_course_or_a_tool.3F

If the student never accessed the course, you can enter the first day of the session, August 30 for session 1 courses and October 4 for session 2 courses.

Reporting student attendance for session 2

You should report on student attendance for any students in session 2 courses tat you may be teaching by midnight tomorrow, Thursday, October 14. CCCOnline's attendance policy helps to identify students who do not intend to actively participate in courses. If necessary, courses will need revised to comply with the Attendance Policy. Contact your Program Chair for guidance with necessary revisions.

To comply with this policy, each CCCOnline course must require students to:

1. Participate in an "Introductions" discussion, which may or may not be graded.

2. Submit a graded, content-related assessment prior to the census date.

- The census date is the last day to drop in a term (see the Academic Calendar).
- The assessment must be content related – it should not be a "syllabus quiz".
- The assessment may be a Dropbox, Quiz, or Discussion

Process for verifying student attendance

Use the following instructions:

1. By Census Date (Oct 14th), login to the Faculty Gateway through the faculty portal at : https://myportal.cccs.edu/jsp/misc/schoolLoginNew.jsp?school=ccco

2. Click the "Online Roster" link.

3. Click the "Attendance Register" link next to the title of the course.

4. Click on the checkbox for “Introductory Discussion” if the student completed an Introductory Discussion post.

5. Click on the checkbox for “First Assignment” if the student has completed the first assignment (Recall that this assignment should be a graded, content-related assignment.).

6. Click on the checkbox for “Extenuating Circumstances” if the student did not post to the Introductory Discussion or the content-related assessment, but you have additional information that leads you to believe that the student may be active at a later date. The “Extenuating Circumstances” designation might be selected, for example, if:

- The student communicated with you or class peers elsewhere in the course.
- The student notified you s/he will start the term late.
- The student has given you other reasons to expect s/he may become active.

7. After selecting the designation for each student, click the “Submit” button to save your selections.

New Student Authentication Process

Starting this Monday, October 11, your students may receive a series of authentication questions designed to help us authenticate and verify student identities. This process is managed by a third-party called Acxiom. This is part of our on-going efforts at improving student identification, attendance and retention (see the previous post from Lisa on Sept 13, "Attendance Policy for Students/Formerly No-show).

The following e-mail has been sent to all students regarding the start of our use of Acxiom on Monday. PerceptIS has also been informed of this change.

CCCOnline Course Authentication and Participation Policy (CAPP)

To improve our overall program integrity, ensure that each student is doing his/her own work and comply with our home colleges’ accreditation agencies, CCCOnline is implementing the following steps:

• During the semester, students may be presented with random pop-up security questions when logging into their online course(s).

• All students will be required to complete at least two assignments within the first two weeks of the semester.

Students who do not meet the CAPP requirements may be reported by their instructor to the CCCOnline Student Services Department.

The random security question authentication process is managed by Acxiom, a third-party company. CCCOnline does not have access to this database. This data is secured by Acxiom, which complies with student privacy and FERPA regulations. Acxiom’s privacy policies are available at www.acxiom.com/privacy.

After the student enters his/her S# and password on the D2L login page or accesses D2L via the portal, a screen appears to “Verify Your Identity.”

Students should type their current address into the Identification Verification box.

• After the address is submitted, up to four questions will appear on screen asking Identity Verification questions. There may be a short delay before these questions display on the screen.

• Students should answer the questions honestly, and keep in mind that “none of the above” may be a valid answer for some questions.

• After students answer and submit their answers to the Identity Verification questions, there is a delay before the student is logged into their online course. This delay can last up to two minutes. Please be patient and do not click the submit button multiple times.

FALSE--the email address you see in D2L, for example asorensen@cccs.desire2learn.com, is NOT a valid email address outside of D2L.

This semester we have had multiple student inquiries about emails they have sent to their instructor but the instructor is not responding. With a little research from the techies at D2L we have discovered that students are trying to email their instructor using an outside account, such as gmail or yahoo, and these messages are not getting delivered to the internal D2L email.

IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE:

Do NOT list your cccs.desire2learn.com address on your instructor widget or Instructor Information page!! Students will try to use this address outside of D2L and then be disgruntled when the message is not delivered to you. :O)

If a student complains that you are not responding to their emails. Let me them know that they only way they can email you is using the Email tool within D2L or with the alternate address you have provided such as your cccs.edu email account.

If you have not setup your CCCS email account or have questions, please email profhelp@cccs.edu.

No-Shows

Hi Everyone-

I thought you might be interested in the no-show data from John Schmahl this semester. These are students who have not logged in at all this semester. About half of the colleges drop students who are reported as no-shows.

Jon Sherrill just pulled the no-shows and Roxanne has sent them on to the colleges. It looks like we had a total of 442 individual students (unduplicated headcount) who have not logged in. We currently have 9,546 unduplicated headcount for session 1. I’ll pull the attendance information this afternoon on which faculty have reported their attendance information.

Attendance Policy for Students/Formerly No-Show

Hi Everyone-

My apologies for the long email. The attendance procedure is towards the end. Census date is Tuesday, September 14th.

This year the former No-Show Policy has changed to the Attendance Policy. There are several reasons for the change. First, online classes are a target for groups who are interested in fraudulently applying for financial aid. Because of this we are attempting to verify class attendance of all students early in the semester. Initially we ran a no-show report and labeled those who did not login to class at all as no-shows and recommended to the colleges that they drop these students. The majority of the financial aid scams however have involved "students" who do login to class. Many of them also participate in the Introductory Discussion, but few participate beyond that.

Second, as you know, many of the colleges we serve do not drop students for no-show. Our preference at CCCOnline is that students are dropped for non-attendance, but before we can request that of all of the colleges we need to collect data showing that most students who either do not attend at all or only login a couple of times are not successful in their courses. The new policy and procedure will help with that.

Last, online education in general is at risk whenever we can't verify that our students are who they say they are and that we know who is completing the courses. We have designed courses in such a way that makes it likely that the student who begins the course also finishes it. In addition, we are working with Acxiom, a company that collects large amounts of public information about people, to introduce a set of identity questions upon login to D2L sometime during the first couple of weeks of classes. We may have that project in place for fall 2, but it is not complete at this time.

Attendance Policy

CCCOnline's attendance policy helps to identify students who do not intend to actively participate in courses. If necessary, courses will need revised to comply with the Attendance Policy. Contact your Program Chair for guidance with necessary revisions.

To comply with this policy, each CCCOnline course must require students to:

1. Participate in an "Introductions" discussion, which may or may not be graded.

2. Submit a graded, content-related assessment prior to the census date.

- The census date is the last day to drop in a term (see the Academic Calendar).
- The assessment must be content related – it should not be a "syllabus quiz".
- The assessment may be a Dropbox, Quiz, or Discussion

Process for verifying student attendance

Use the following instructions:

1. On or very shortly after the Census Date (Sept.14th), login to the Faculty Gateway: https://at.ccconline.org/faculty/

2. Click the "Online Roster" link.

3. Click the "Attendance Register" link next to the title of the course.

4. Click on the checkbox for “Introductory Discussion” if the student completed an Introductory Discussion post.

5. Click on the checkbox for “First Assignment” if the student has completed the first assignment (Recall that this assignment should be a graded, content-related assignment.).

6. Click on the checkbox for “Extenuating Circumstances” if the student did not post to the Introductory Discussion or the content-related assessment, but you have additional information that leads you to believe that the student may be active at a later date. The “Extenuating Circumstances” designation might be selected, for example, if:

- The student communicated with you or class peers elsewhere in the course.
- The student notified you s/he will start the term late.
- The student has given you other reasons to expect s/he may become active.

7. After selecting the designation for each student, click the “Submit” button to save your selections.

Archive Tab on Your D2L Page

In order to streamline the D2L tab that displays courses (the Instructor tab), our Academic Technologies staff has programmed a new tab called the Archive tab into D2L. Beginning Monday, September 6, your Spring 2010 and Summer 2010 courses will be displayed on this new Archive tab instead of on the Instructor tab. The Fall 2009 pilots, if you have one, will be removed completely out of sight (but not deleted) as we don’t have a method to move them to the new tab.

With this new tab, you will be able to access your past courses if necessary, but they won't be in the way of your current courses. Beginning in January 2011, term courses that are 12 months or older will be deleted. This does NOT affect DEV courses or master courses per se. For instance, Fall 2009 courses will be over 1 year old in January and will be removed. At the end of the Spring 2011 term, the Spring 2010 courses will be removed. This policy is the same as what was followed on Blackboard in previous years

Update from Profhelp

Hi Everyone-

Here are the responses to the two most common questions received by Profhelp this fall... or anyway two of the questions for which she has to give you the opposite of the answer you may want to hear. Sorry about that!

The program chairs have elected to turn off the “New” notification of discussions, dropboxes, quizzes, etc. from the Course Homepage. For example, when a student leaps straight to the discussion through the icon, the "last access" date in the classlist does not update. This notification has been turned off for both students and instructors. Sorry for any inconvenience. The update widget still shows unread emails and discussion posts and the email button shows unread emails.
Unfortunately, we can’t move the Fall2010 courses to the top of the list on your Course Homepage. The good news is that soon all of the previous term courses will appear on another tab which will allow the current term courses to be the only courses appearing on the instructor tab.

That first answer is driven by financial aid and by students who are having trouble in their class. We need to have login data that is as close to accurate as possible to manage the financial aid process, particularly for those students who simply stop attending class rather than officially drop. We had hoped D2L would have a fix for this in place for the fall term, but they are not quite there.

Yesterday's slowness was primarily due to problems in a data center. We believe there are still pockets of slowness for D2L users, but nothing consistent. Student calls to the help desk have not mentioned slowness so students do not appear to be experiencing significant problems. David Chatham continues to track the issue and will let you know if there is an update.

You don’t need to do anything different for these students, I just wanted to make everyone aware of this change since their student ID’s are slightly different. Fall Session I is very quickly approaching, and I know everyone is busy wrapping up summer tasks and trying to get ready for the August 30 start date. Here are just a few notes of interest and reminders for you.

Email

We continue to work on getting CCCS email access straightened out for everyone. This process has been complicated by a variety of factors that are, unfortunately, out of our control, so we appreciate your continued patience as we work out the kinks!

TurnItIn

As you may remember from Karen's August 4 post, there is now a plagiarism checking tool available in the course dropbox. Liz Dzabic will host a webinar on this tool in September. We did discover yesterday that if TurnItIn is enabled in a course, duplication of that course somehow turns the tool off, so you will need to enable it again in the duped course. The folks at TurnItIn are working to fix this bug.

Course Verification and Ready

Please remember to verify course content of duped courses within 72 hours of duping and to note them as "ready" when you have completed the course readiness checklist items. We will do a thorough check of courses during the course readiness checks that begin on Thursday, and will notify program chairs of any items that need attention.

Authentication Assignment

Remember to set up a graded, content-based assignment (not a syllabus quiz or similar assignment) that is due prior to census date (the last day to drop).

Bloggers

Many thanks to our summer Faculty Voices bloggers. If you haven't check out those blogs lately, please do! I thoroughly enjoyed reading them, and I think you'll find some great information there.

Portal

While the portal has had a few growing pains in the last few days due to heavy use at the compuses, I'm still very excited about it! I really like having that one location for all my links and logins, though I still occasionally forget to to there to get everywhere else.

Portal Update: New Email Addresses for faculty

Hello Everyone-

I hope most of you have had a chance to log in to the new portal for CCCOnline. A complaint we received frequently from faculty was that, while we have a lot of information available for you, that information was scattered across too many locations. The portal has given us an accessible place to organize everything you need. Please let me know if something is missing or on a tab within the portal that is not relatively intuitive.

As part of this effort we have also set up a cccs.edu email address for each of you. The email is accessible from the portal (and from the web in general). This email address will give you a way to communicate with your students outside of D2L without involving your personal email addresses. While our preference is to have as much email communication with students as possible occur within D2L we know that isn't possible between terms.

And while I hate to worry overmuch about lawsuits and other student protests we have more students now than in the past and the risk is higher. In those cases it is much better when all communication with students happens on CCCOnline software and servers so that your own personal computers are not at risk in any way. Along those lines, we have also purchased a second tool from Turnitin (the anti-plagiarism company) called Markup. Markup allows you to grade papers online without ever downloading them to your personal computer. Information about Markup is available in the wiki at https://at.ccconline.org/faculty/wiki/Tech_Tools_-_D2L_-_Dropbox#Grade_Dropbox_Folders_with_Online_Markup.3F.

Please take a moment to set up your cccs.edu email address. We will begin to use that address to communicate with you this fall.

New Nav Bar!

Hello Everyone-

One of the improvements to D2L in the new version we installed this summer is a slightly changed top navigation bar. We didn't want to turn that on in the middle of a semester for fear it would cause confusion for the students, but it is now available to you.

The most significant change is that the Nav Bar now wraps when it reaches the right edge of the browser window instead of disappearing out of the edge of the window. That means you can put more links there then you could in the past. The default is in fact that all tools are shown as links on the Nav Bar. Nothing has changed in terms of removing unused links from the bar -- you can still do that (and probably should); directions are available on the wiki at https://at.ccconline.org/faculty/wiki/Tech_Tools_-_D2L_-_Homepages_and_Navigation#Remove_Tools_from_My_Course_Navigation_Bar.3F.

Last, when you hover over a link on the nav bar the link will now be highlighted in gray (see content link below.)

Summer Grades Due August 19

It's that time of the semester, Summer grades are due no later than Thursday, August 12, 2010.

Please follow the directions below to enter grades for your courses. If you have any questions regarding grades, please contact me (john.schmahl@cccs.edu).

Once you have submitted your grades, we will pull a daily report listing the grades and they will be entered into Banner for the students. Grades will not be viewable by the students until the day after they are entered.

You must report a Last Date of Attendance (LDA) for any student who receives a grade of “F”. The LDA is the date that the student submitted their last graded assessment or assignment. To find this date in D2L, you can follow the directions here http://at.ccconline.org/faculty/wiki/Tech_Tools_-_D2L_-_Classlist#How_do_I_review_student.27s_access_to_the_course_or_a_tool.3F

If the student never accessed the course, you can enter the first day of the session, June 7, 2010.

New D2L Tools to Use as you Update your Courses for Fall!

As you prepare your courses for the fall term, please remember that you must have a content related graded assignment completed prior to the census date for fall 1 which is September 14th. This assignment will help you determine how to mark students on the attendance roster that you will complete.

We would also like to announce the addition of some new tools in D2L. The first is TurnItIn which you may have already noticed in your Dropbox tool. Plagiarism Detection scans Dropbox submissions resulting in an "Originality Report" icon for instructors on the "Submissions" and "Leave Feedback" page with color-coded percentages of possible plagiarism. Online Markup allows instructors to insert inline text, highlight text, and add and reuse comments across submissions in a variety of document formats all from the Dropbox Folder "Leave Feedback" page. Some suggestions to keep in mind when using the plagiarism detection tool:
-Before you use the plagiarism tool, consult with your Program Chair about expectations.
-Include information for learners that this tool will be used when grading assignments and consider adding to your course "Instructions" about viewing the Originality Report and/or Online Markup.
-View the Faculty Handbook Academic Integrity page for ideas about constructive use of the Plagiarism Detection option (link below).
-Select to "Allow submitters to see Originality Reports" and leave all other settings at defaults.

Another exciting, handy tool for faculty as you update your courses for fall is the Manage Dates Tool which you access through Edit Course. Using the Manage Dates tool for Dropbox and Quiz items adjusts the start and end date for these items. Students can see them, but not access them until the dates you set in Manage Dates. Be careful, using the Manage Dates tool for Content, Discussions, and Grades affects the VISIBILITY of these items. If you set dates for Content, Discussions, and Grades from the Manage Dates tool those items are not VISIBLE to students before or after the dates you set in Manage Dates. CCCOnline strongly discourages the hiding of any content in our courses.

D2L Grades
When: Tuesday, August 3, 2010 (1:00PM - 3:00PM Mountain)
What: Participants will lean the basics of using the D2L Grades tool effectively, including the basics of setting up Grades and making sure your Grades tool is accurate during and at the end of a term.
Second Language Writers Part 1 - Understanding Second Language Writers
When: Wednesday, August 25, 2010 (1:00PM - 2:30PM Mountain)
What: By examining profiles of 5 non-native speakers of English, participants will explore strengths such students bring to the college classroom as well as challenges these students face. Highlights from recent research on second language writers and older research in the area of contrastive rhetoric will inform a discussion of how instructors can use knowledge about students’ linguistic backgrounds to support students’ learning.
Second Language Writers Part 2 - Working with Second Language Writers and Their Writing
When: Friday, August 27, 2010 (1:00PM - 2:30PM Mountain)
What: Using student writing samples, participants will discuss strategies for working with second language writers to improve writing in English. Drawing on research on second language acquisition and second language writing, the presenter will address issues of content, organization, grammar, and voice. Suggestions for the timing and content of feedback to students will be addressed.

D2L Version 9

Hi Everyone-

Yesterday we upgraded to version 9 in D2L. Today you may have noticed some of the new features. Among them you should see:

If a student has added a picture to their My Settings widget, it will show up in the classlist and in discussion posts.
When grading you can now leave feedback for each student's discussion in the Topic Score Details window.
Classlist now shows the last time a student has accessed the course.
Files can now be edited in Manage Files. Rolling your mouse over a file and then clicking the drop-down arrow will give options to edit, rename, copy, cut, delete, download, preview, and add content topic.
When something is saved a bkue bar appears at the top of the D2L page (covers the Global Navbar) for about 5 seconds saying "saved successfully".
Rubrics are similar to grade forms in BB. This is a really cool tool and training on it will be available later this summer. (We recommend you wait for training before trying to set it up.)

Colorado Teaching and Learning Conference (COLTT)

The annual COLTT conference will be held August 11 and 12 at CU Boulder. Visit the conference website at https://www.cusys.edu/coltt/2010/index.html for additional information.

The Colorado Community College System has generously offered to sponsor registration for approximately ten faculty members from across the Community College System to attend COLTT this year. Please note that the intent is to distribute the scholarships across the community colleges, hence we will first prioritize one applicant from each school. Sponsorships will be awarded on a first come first serve basis.

For those who represent any of the following schools, an additional travel honorarium will be provided for their attendance at COLTT to help underwrite their travel costs. (This travel benefit does not apply to faculty from the metro area colleges.) The campuses that would be eligible for the travel honorarium are Trinidad, OJC, Lamar, Pueblo, Pikes Peak, NJC Sterling, Morgan CC, CNCC, CCC online.

Please submit your application online through our registration link, choose the skip payment option and reference CCCS in the text box. Upon completion please forward a copy of the confirmation page to Jill Lester, the COLTT Conference Coordinator at coltt@cu.edu. This is a reminder to back up your course gradebook by exporting grades to your own computer. For help, please see the “Exporting Grades” tutorial.

Following this process each time you post grades means you’ll have a backup in case of technical difficulties. Thanks!

No Show statistics to date

With 64% of faculty reporting here is where we are so far:

82% of students are active in class.

10% are no-shows.

8% don't meet the definition of active, but have been reported as keepers.

70% of the 10% (7%) of students reported as no shows are attending a home college that does drop no shows. That means we will see some roster clean-up from this exercise.
