Summer Training Opportunities

Student Survey

The student survey should now be available for your students. Please encourage everyone to fill out these surveys so we can get some good data back on all our classes. The survey will run from today, July 14, through Sunday, July 26. Remember that the survey is not delivered in the online classroom. Students will receive a popup message when they log in indicating that the survey is available.

Blackboard Technical Issues

Hi everyone. I've received lots of phone calls and emails about Blackboard and slowness or total inability to log in. I understand from Kurt Reed that BB is aware of the issue and is working on it, but we do not have an estimated repair time. The best advice I can give you for now is to try to be patient. . . as I myself am trying valiantly!

Interesting Blog post on designing courses: http://teachingcollegemath.com/?p=1158. He suggests building the course based on the material or outcomes, then imposing a schedule on top of that. He also eliminated naming conventions like "Unit 1" that are fairly useless when you want to quickly add more material.

Supervises: Educational Technology Trainer, part-time faculty & staff and work-study students

The Position: The Director of Online Learning coordinates the overall online education program at CCA and serves on the system-level Learning Technologies Council. At the college level, the position advises academic chairs and faculty in choosing appropriate courses and programs for online delivery and in choosing appropriate formats for those programs and classes. The position serves as the Systems Administrator for the Learning Management System and provides technical support to faculty, students, and staff. At the state level the position works with system colleagues to set online education policy, choose products and resources for the system’s online education programs, and manage transitions and changes as appropriate. The successful candidate will possess an innovative spirit and will demonstrate vision and good leadership skills.


Duties and Responsibilities:

• Work proactively with Department Chairs to increase online and hybrid course offerings.
• Mentor and encourage professional growth for faculty.
• Provide support services for faculty and students enrolled in and working with on-line, hybrid and web-enhanced courses.
• Serve as the college’s representative to the CCCS Learning Technology Council.
• Serve as the Systems Administrator / Subject Matter Expert on the Learning Management System.
• Provide technical support on issues related to the Learning Management System.
• Assist in developing strategies for enrollment outreach and enrollment management to increase overall enrollment in online education offerings.
• Working closely with the Associate Dean for Instruction, co-chair the college’s Technology Committee.
• Develop short and long range goals for Online Learning including projections on how many new hybrid and online courses may be offered each semester.
• Assist Department Chairs and Faculty with incorporating more web-enhanced activities into existing courses.
• Work with Information Technology regarding any technology issues affecting Online Learning.
• Be knowledgeable of policies, issues, and laws affecting Online Learning.
• Remain current with system and national developments in online education, and choose products and resources appropriate for the college’s Online Learning programs.
• Manage workloads, course schedules, and meeting deadlines
• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

• A relevant bachelors degree from an accredited institution
• Three years administrative, managerial or supervisory experience
• Experience coordinating / managing a online education program
• Demonstrated ability to administer a Learning Management System
• Experience teaching in an online environment
• Experience working collaboratively with faculty and staff using instructional technologies
• Excellent interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications:

• A relevant graduate degree from an accredited institution
• Demonstrated skills in management and leadership
• Community college teaching experience
• Budget management experience
• Understanding the mission and purpose of a community college

Salary: This is a full-time, 12-month appointment. Beginning salary range is mid $40s to mid $60s. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. CCA offers an excellent benefit plan. The 2009 CCCCOnline Faculty Conference will be on September 25th at Arapahoe Community College. Our focus will be the migration to Desire to Learn (D2L) for spring 2010. We will offer hands-on opportunities to introduce you to your course in D2L. You will also have an open D2L lab to visit with and ask questions of CCCOnline Instructional Designers and pilot faculty. In addition, there will be a number of sessions on topics that are pertinent no matter what learning management system you are using. Registration information will be coming soon.

Do not assume you have been dropped from a class for not attending or logging in; at many colleges you must drop a class before the above date or you will be responsible for full payment. Contact the Cashier’s Office at your Home College to find out their individual policy.

Learning Management System Update

Hi Everyone-

As most of you know we are planning to move to the Desire2Learn learning management system in the coming year. Work on that project began last summer with an informal market survey which eventually led to the contract with D2L signed a few weeks ago.

Our primary goal for the summer is to migrate a course shell for each of you. For many of you this will be an individual course shell, for some of you your chair is taking advantage of the move to bring faculty together to develop a joint shell again.

The summer has three primary tasks: 1) At this moment D2L is building the production server for us. We expect that to be available at least for the Academic Technology group towards the end of June. 2) The Training and Professional Development group is beginning to develop training materials for traditional facilitated online workshops, face-to-face workshops, webinars, and just-in-time modules for the wiki. 3) The intructional designers are working on checklists that will show everyone what they have checked and updated in all migrated courses and what you as faculty will need to check and update. (So far those checklists are fairly short for both groups.) They are also working with D2L to fine-tune the migration script - limiting the changes and updates that will need to be made in each class as much as we possibly can.

This fall should bring two milestones: first, we will run a *small* pilot program in D2L; and second, faculty will gain access to their own courses in D2L. The faculty conference this fall (September 25th) will be a great chance for everyone to spend a little time in their D2L shells and to begin to get ready for spring.

Spring 2011 is planned to be the first semester truly using D2L. While our Blackboard contract doesn't expire until June 30, 2011, we are currently planning to have all of our courses moved to D2L for the spring 2011 term.

We have a new suite of student success tools provided by Deb Michels and Kathy Miles (that's Deb's friendly voice in the audio). A new "course" called "Student Success Skills for College" is available online at http://www.ccconline.org/Future_Students/Skills_for_Success_in_College/.

Hey everyone! Results of student surveys for Spring term are now available at the faculty gateway. Go to https://at.ccconline.org/faculty/login.php and log in to see your results. Please be sure to review your results and let your program chair know if you have concerns.

Note this from the Faculty Wiki: "The QA process requires that faculty receive a 3.5 or better in each section (on a 5-point scale). Sections where only a small percentage of the students returned the survey or extremely small sections are looked at on a case-by-case basis."

Your program chair will notify you if there is a concern regarding your survey results.

Per faculty request, Gold Star Faculty, Al Turner, is offering an evening webinar! Join us for Communicating with Students on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 - Beginning at 7:00 PM MT.

The online teaching environment uniquely challenges us to effectively communicate our expectations, teach content, and be responsive to student needs in and out of the classroom. CCCOnline Gold Star faculty, Al Turner, will share the lessons he's learned about positively communicating with students in an online classroom. Turner will share his tips, tricks, and techniques for making the most of his discussions, e-mails, announcements, and grading techniques in his Political Science and International Relations courses.
